WORKFORCE REPORT 2018

5.2. Gender Pay Gap In 2018, companies with more than 250 employees have had to report on their gender pay gap for the first time, using data from the snapshot date of 5 April 2017. Figures 19 and 20 show the average hourly gender pay gap for employees within our member companies and by sector, respectively. The overall pay gap for the sector (hourly pay) is 24.4 per cent, which compares with the national average of 18.4 per cent. 14 If median earnings are used, the sector average is 25.5 per cent compared with the national average of 9.1 per cent. Although the average pay gap for the oil and gas sector is above the national average, it is in line with other STEM-related sectors. For example, the UK high tech sector has a pay gap of 25 per cent (based on total remuneration). 15

It also reflects the lower numbers of women in senior technical and managerial roles that are more highly paid, as well as the fact that women make up the majority of part-time workers, which tends to be lower paid. 16
