ENVIRONMENT REPORT 2014

Chemical Releases Over 130 tonnes of chemicals were accidentally released from 209 reported incidents in 2013. This represents a 56 per cent reduction in the volume of chemicals released since 2012 and 29 fewer incidents. Notably, in 2013, almost 131,150 tonnes of chemicals were permitted to be discharged offshore; therefore, accidental chemical releases represent 0.1 per cent of the total chemicals (almost 131,280 tonnes) emitted to the marine environment last year. Similarly, accidental chemical releases make up 0.03 per cent of the total chemicals used offshore (374,520 tonnes) in 2013 (see section 3).
