The Oil & Gas Technology Centre Accelerating technology for a net-zero future

Since the inception of the Oil & Gas Technology Centre (OGTC) in early 2017, the long-term license-to-operate challenge has been at the heart of its Technology Vision. As a result, while the OGTC has co-invested more than £130 million with industry in more than 200 projects, from the beginning, its portfolio has included integrated energy and carbon management projects such as:

EC-OG PowerHub The OGTC has co-invested in EC-OG's ground- breaking turbine system which harnesses ocean energy to produce autonomous electrical power for multiple applications including subsea wells. Integrating renewable energy technologies with the production process delivers a low carbon source of power while reducing overall operating costs.

Hydrogen Offshore Production Project The OGTC is leading a multi-partner project to develop an offshore hydrogen production, storage and distribution hub. Awarded £500,000 of UK Government funding, the project is a unique collaboration Aquatera, Cranfield University, Doosan, EMEC Hydrogen and NOV. Industrial trials will take place at the Flotta Oil Terminal in Orkney.

The Net Zero Solution Centre The OGTC recently established a Net Zero Solution Centre and published a Net Zero Technology Roadmap to accelerate technologies that help decarbonise operations and enable the industry to deliver the world’s first net-zero hydrocarbon basin. Aligned to the industry’s Roadmap 2035, this new centre is backed by the UK and Scottish Governments and companies including BP, Shell, Wood, Chrysaor, Aker Solutions, INEOS, CNOOC International, Total, Siemens and Equinor. Working across the energy sector, it will support the creation of an integrated offshore energy system, partnering with companies and R&D organisations on the development of a portfolio of technology development projects in four focus areas: net-zero offshore operations, integrating offshore renewables, hydrogen production and CCUS.
